Today's 4-H experiences are filled with much more than 4-H projects and club meetings.  There are a multitude of experiences that can make "4-H...More Than You Ever Imagined." 

On this page, you will find descriptions of the county and state opportunities available to older 4-H youth.  Please contact the Extension Office if you have questions about any of these opportunities!

County and State Opportunities 

  • 4-H Teen Conference – Saturday, February 16, 2008 – Over 800 4-H members from across the state will gather in Columbus for this event filled with sessions of interest to teens!  If you are interested, check it on the green form.  Return the form to us and we will mail you registration materials including session descriptions.
  • Buckeye Leadership Workshop – March 26-30, 2008 – Participants must be at least 16 or older or a sophomore in high school.  Learn recreational leadership skills at this outstanding event held March 26-30 at Recreation Unlimited Camp in Delaware, Ohio. 
  • 4-H Leadership Camp – July 22-26, 2008 - A five-day camp held at Camp Ohio, Utica. This program focuses on helping youth develop leadership by actually planning, conducting, and evaluating major parts of the camp program.
  • 4-H Sea Camp – July 2008 – Held on Kelleys Island, Ohio 4-H Sea Camp provides youth an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities, including:  fishing, ecology, marine navigation, snorkeling, SCUBA, sailing and much more. 
  • 4-H Citizenship Washington Focus - June 15-21, 2008 - In this experience, the nation’s capital becomes a classroom for fostering understanding and involvement in civic responsibility, government operations, and current issues.  Visit government officials, historic sites, museums, and monuments and meet other 4-H members from across the state and across the nation. 
  • 4-H Camp Counselor – Erie County 4-H Camp will be held June 9-12 at Kelleys Island. To be a counselor, individuals must be 15 years of age or a freshman in high school as of January 1, 2008.  Please indicate your interest on the green form, and you will be contacted at a later date with further details.  Even if you have served as a camp counselor in the past, please return the green form so we know you are interested in serving as a counselor again.
  • Cloverbud Day Camp Counselor – Help plan and conduct Cloverbud Day Camp.  Youth must be at least a current 6th grade, entering 7th grade in the fall of 2008.  Details will follow.
  • County Junior Fair Board – Youth must be at least a 6th grader, entering 7th grade in the fall of 2008.  Details to follow, watch for it in the 4-H newsletter – The Buzz.
  • 4-H CARTEENS – CARTEENS is a traffic safety education program for first time teen traffic offenders.  A unique aspect of the program is that teens serve as the instructors and curriculum planners for the CARTEENS sessions which are held approximately 6 times a year.  Program topics include excessive speed, driving under the influence, seat belt use, consequences of unsafe decisions, dealing with peer pressure, and traffic laws, signs, and signals.   To be a CARTEENS instructor, individuals must be 15 years of age or a freshman in high school as of January 1, 2008. 
  • County 4-H Scholarship – applications will be mailed to all eligible 4-H members in March.
  • Outstanding 4-H Boy & Girl Awards - applications will be mailed to all eligible 4-H members in July.

State and National Opportunities

  • State Junior Fair Board – This board is comprised of representatives from several different youth organizations in Ohio including 4-H Youth Development.  State Junior Fair Board members help strengthen and coordinate State Fair activities in a fast-paced, action-packed month at the Ohio State Fair.  Junior Fair Board members are expected to attend meetings and stay at the fair for the entire 12 days.  The Ohio State Fair will be held in Columbus, Ohio and is scheduled for July 30 – August 10, 2008.
  • National 4-H Dairy Conference – This national event provides delegates with an opportunity to learn more about the dairy industry and observe new dairy industry developments.  The conference is scheduled to be held at the University of Wisconsin (located in Madison, Wisconsin) in early October, 2008.
  • Ohio Dairy Goat Conference – This conference provides delegates with the opportunity to learn more about the dairy goat industry and observe new dairy goat industry practices.  The conference is scheduled to be held at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio sometime in September/October, 2007.
  • OTA Local Government Award – Two $1,500 awards are available to any 4-H high school senior who has completed a local government-type activity that has had significant impact on the applicant’s community, township, or county.
  • State Achievement Awards – These 23 awards recognize a 4-H member’s achievement in a specific area.  Areas include:  Beef, CARTEENS, Citizenship & Community Service, Clothing & Textiles, Companion Animals, Dairy, Dairy Goat, Environmental Sciences, Family Life & Child Development, Foods & Nutrition, Gardening & Horticulture, Health & Safety, Horse, Leadership, Mechanical & Engineering Sciences, Personal Development, Photography, Poultry, Rabbits, Sheep, Shooting Sports, Swine, and Veterinary Science.  Each achievement award winner will receive a trip to National 4-H Congress that is scheduled to be held in Atlanta, Georgia from November 28 – December 2, 2008. 
  • Ohio 4-H Scholarships – There are 24 state 4-H scholarships available in 2008 and each has its own description and its own list of eligibility requirements.  Applicants must complete an Ohio 4-H Scholarship Application Form.  Indicate your interest in state 4-H scholarships on the green Older Youth Opportunities Interest Form.
  • Ohio 4-H Ambassador – Each year, delegates are selected from each county to serve a one year term as a State 4-H Ambassador.  Ambassadors are selected based on their accomplishments in leadership, public speaking, and community service and are required to attend a comprehensive training and represent Ohio’s 4-H youth at various state and local events.  Applicants must complete an Ohio 4-H Ambassador Application Form.  Indicate your interest in becoming a State 4-H Ambassador on the green Older Youth Opportunities Interest Form.
  • International Programs – These programs allow 4-H members and alumni ages 14-30 to serve as a host to a youth from another country or to travel abroad as a 4-H representative to more than 30 countries around the world.  Some scholarships are available for travel.  Applicants must complete a specialized application form.  Indicate your interest in 4-H international programs on the green Older Youth Opportunities Interest Form.
